No more secret political ads; Said by Facebook

Facebook

California:

The social media giant Facebook has announced new plans to increase ad transparency and authentication requirements for advertisers, a move that comes amid ongoing scrutiny over Russia’s use of social media to meddle in American politics will soon allow its users to see all active ads being run by any account,

The social media giant will soon allow its users to see all active ads being run by any account, as well as an archive of ads related to U.S. federal elections.

Social Media giant will also require political advertisers to verify their identities and will require them to include a disclosure in election-related ads that read: “Paid for by.”

“When it comes to advertising on Facebook, people should be able to tell who the advertiser is and see the ads they’re running, especially for political ads,”

said Rob Goldman, Facebook’s VP of ads, in a blog post announcing the new policies.

During the Canadian tests, only current ads will be available, but by the American rollout, the company plans to have an archive of previous ads run by a page in addition to the ones they’re currently running.

Facebook said it was expanding the transparency measures to all ads, and that they would all have to be linked to a page. Users would also be able to view the ads any page was running, it added.
